Queen Elizabeth’s School – Multi Site Point-to-Point Internet

Using Point-to-Point Multi-site Technology in Queen Elizabeth’s School

  • Back-Up Internet between two sites
  • Improving upload/download speed of material over the network
  • Designated frequency; no interference over backup when used.

Queen Elizabeth’s School or QE, as it is often affectionately known, is a highly achieving academy based in Crediton, Devon. QE are a successful school at the heart of the community and are committed to ensuring each individual student receives the best education possible and they do their utmost to ensure the wellbeing and happiness of all pupils, as ultimately this breeds success.

In June 2017, QEs’ Data and Communications department reached out to us to help resolve a problem. Their current 1Gbps microwave radio link had died.  This is a wireless technology that provides fast connection from one point to another to send and receive data, such as document files, voice and video.  In this instance the link between two sites half a mile apart was used to run learning material from one school campus where the data was hosted to another where the students and teachers accessed the information and learning material. Due to the nature of the business and size of the data being sent to-and-fro, the backup link was not sufficient and a replacement was needed; the upcoming holiday period meant that the window to install a new link was tight.

We immediately ran surveys and decided Siklu’s EtherHaul Kilo Series microwave would be the best fit for the application. This industry leading tech works on a registered frequency (70/80GHz) band with TDD & FDD support. This means that we can supply a true 1Gbps link with zero radio interference and no congestion slowing down the download and uploads of traffic.

The effects of the solution were immediate; the school now had high speed connections between each campus without the overheads of paying for a monthly dedicated backup fibre line to failover their data.

If you have a similar setup and need to send data from one business premises to another, give us a call, we’d love the opportunity to speak.
