Redrow Homes – Construction Site Data Network Cabling

About the data network cabling project

Redrow Homes are one of the UK’s most trusted new home builders, with award winning sites spanning right across the country.  As well as providing many of their new home sites with temporary construction site WiFi, Grapevine Connect also designs and installs network cabling infrastructure to temporary site offices during the all-important construction phase, for data and voice connectivity purposes.

A typical project will require structured Cat5e cabling with the associated data outlets in single or multiple portacabins, depending on the scale of the construction site.  Grapevine Connect always conducts a free full site survey prior to costing the project, as the nature of each construction site is unique.  This can be done from customer supplied site plans or photos, or onsite by us if required.

Our Project Management team will then design and cost the structured cabling network project, ensuring all bases are covered.  Prior to commencement of the installation, we liaise closely with the site manager, providing cabling plans, risk and method statements plus relevant insurance and engineer certifications for approval, prior to us turning up on site.

Once the cabling installation date is agreed, we keep in touch with delivery dates, as we know that things often change rapidly in the construction industry.  We make every endeavour to work with the customer’s timeline and understand that sometimes timings move.  We’re flexible like that.

On installation day, we do another quick site survey, just to check the plan, risk and method statement is still current, and to confirm the cable routes.  Thoroughness is our middle name.

If external cabling is required, we use external grade black Cat5e cable, to protect the network from the elements.  And if multiple portacabins are being connected, we ensure that conduit links are used, both to provide secure cable routing and protection from damage.  Construction sites can be harsh environments for data infrastructure cables…

The cables are brought internally into the cabin and then run direct to data socket outlets.  All cables are then run back to a central point where they are protected in cable sock and terminated onto 24-way patch panels before being mounted into the data cabinet.

Back at the data socket, cables are terminated onto cat5e modules at the outlet locations, labelled and tested.  Test reports are stored and supplied to the customer.

And as you would expect from a professional data cabling company, all our engineers use the appropriate PPE, adhere to strict Health and Safety policies and leave the site clear from waste on completion of the structured cabling installation.
